The wood is from various pallets from all over the city that my husband and I pulled from dumpsters and trash piles on construction sites.
I needed each piece to have its own natural color and texture to provide the look that I was going for.
The picture that you see is actually without any staining. The beauty of the different types of materials and weathering process for different types of wood is that they naturally gain color depending upon use and length of weather exposure.
However, for this particular project the customer has gray walls and a darker walnut floor. And although we have used some planks that have a gray weathered look throughout, we are going to use random gray and brown stains to help tie the floor and walls together and lessen the harshness of the material.
To me, each piece of wood has its own story! Some of the pieces are very old and some are newer than the next. An abandoned warehouse on the west side, an old farm in a field in Millersport, a construction dumpster downtown... each has a story. A scratch, a dent, a crack as well as a color.
All have found a new home and life, creating beauty and conversation on this wall at a beauty salon.
